My D40 + 18-200VR lens combination is my “lives in my car all the time, ready to go” kit. The low-light performance is superb, especially considering it’s a 2006-era camera. Of all the cameras I own, the D40 makes the best JPEGs straight out of camera. If I know I need a shot in the field that I’m not going to be able to take back to the office and run through my usual Lightroom post-processing, then I reach for the D40, despite having thousands of dollars of other cameras at my disposal. It’s that good.
Another great feature missing from even my pro bodies is the 1/500th flash sync. This is handy for sunny days or when i have to shoot at noon and need fill flash to avoid dark shadows under the subjects’ eyes. Even a D300s tops out at 1/250th (1/320th with an external flash).
I cannot recommend this body enough to someone interested in photography, either as a first SLR or as a “backup” body. The included 18-55 lens is superb for its price/size, as well.
